Hi All from Australia.
Well, after seeing all your great projects, then finding plans here, made me go looking though the garage to see what bits i had.
Started off with the wildthing plans, shrunk them down to 500mm long, aprox 19 1/2". Bought a sheet of 2mm birch 4 ply, and started cutting with a blade.
I wrongly chose to not use a board to keep things square & true, and have paid for it.

how was the first run ?

to sum it up in one word, LAME. Sat, planed & cornered nicely with the 27mm prop, nothing inside became hot, but then it was not remotely fast. Replaced 27 with 30mm, and bec kicked in. I think the nimh are on the way out. When i split the pack, i noticed 3 of the 6 had only just started to leak. 2 X 50C 2200 Lipos have been ordered. Hopefully will start to sing then. I can feel a brushless moment coming on.

did you use nimh as power source? of course is disappointing . I had a small speed 400 race boat. First I used nimh batteries which made it very slow and had a lot power blackouts. Than I used lipo which was a hugh improvment. Less weight, more reliable, 25% faster. quite fun.
I would avoid nimh.

Baby sitting low in the water. Even though its a toy now, i hope it has potential.

The boats loos great, but it sure does sit low in the water! Have you run it again? Doug

Cheers. Yes, has a few more runs with the 6 cell nimh (all i can fit in there). Now just start off with the 30mm X 1.4 prop which gives aprox 2 mins for planning run time, then will start pushing water. Cant wait for the lipos.
Hope this works:

The boat looks great. I don't know enough about electric boats to help you out too much. It would work better with a flex cable and surface drive in my opinion. With that angle on the prop it's pushing the stern up and the bow down which I don't think is helping your speed any. The ventilation you're getting is probably mainly just the wrong prop although the angle on the prop may not be helping that either. I noticed on your site when I checked it out you called it a shallow vee, which is not correct. this is a true deep vee. It has a 23 degree deadrise on the bottom. Deep vee just refers to the bottom of the hull. This is a low profile hull, but it is a deep vee. Just getting a little picky here, sorry bout that. Doug

Thanks mate.
I will change the site when i have a second. I guess it was a reference to fishing boats we have had. The "V" angle was much more aggressive than your plans. I understand the surface drive setup. This boat will be modded in the future to a flex & stinger. But for now, its just a blast to watch my boys faces when they use it. Main reason for the change is the glass around the drive shaft started to burn with the bronze bushes & solid drive. Plan c will be a bigger (correct) petrol version, with an re-built home lite already waiting. Cheers for the patience & info.

ok, well that was awesome & disappointing at the same time. Took the baby down the local water & gave it ago with the brushless, lipos, & 35mm prop. It sat the same in the water as before. First noticed it aerating on idle to get the water in the cooling pipes. Then on throttle, got big air with barrel roll, and thank god it landed on its base. Next go, not so lucky. Third go, took it easy with gradual inc in throttle resulting in a small wave causing it to disappear under the water. Any remote sort of speed it would turn into a sub. I never doubted you doug, but wanted to have a muck around. Stinnger drive next to do this properly.

One of the first runs until the prop was damaged with the amount of rubbish in the water.

Cheers Mate. Have bought a bronze prop for it, sharpened it, now just have to dunk it again. Possibly some trim tabs as it flips on mild turns. Perhaps im just expecting to much?

Did you balance the prop when you sharpened it? Doug

bendys
06-18-2013, 04:14 AM
Hi Doug, no mate i haven't balanced it. There is not much vibe when run it in the garage, out of water. Much less then the composite plastic one. Will a balanced prop make a difference to turning? Im also doing up an old motorbike, so cash is limited. The flea bay balancers are cheep enough though.

Balancing the prop will make the bearings or bushings in the drive last a lot longer. Doug

Noticed a big difference in engine rpm when the gps was taken off. Will try 3S lipo (12V) next time. I know u guys have benzine in your veins, but my past experience wasnt a happy one running nitro engines taking a gut full of water. All in the name of fun i suppose.

After a 2.5m fall from a shelf due to wind, my baby "wildthing" is going a re-build. The top deck popped off, nose smashed, and fractured transom.
My boys & I loved it, so its getting a upgrade:
